Having worked in a number of Illinois communities in administrative and management roles, Mike brings more than 38 years of local government experience to BARBERMURPHY.
Throughout his professional career, Mike has directed planning and development in both small- and medium-sized communities. His expertise is in strategic economic development planning, including targeted business location studies, marketing and promotion, site selection analysis, structuring of economic incentives for projects and developing land use regulatory measures to achieve desired results. His extensive background in economic development and municipal government helps to facilitate transaction funding and approvals for BARBERMURPHY clients.
Prior to joining BARBERMURPHY in 2010, Mike spent his entire professional career working in Southern and Southwestern Illinois. He is also an Edwardsville resident. With deep roots in the region, he has an excellent understanding of the area, keen knowledge of regional development programs and has built strong working relationships with local and state governmental officials.
Mike has been involved with a number of notable local projects, including the new Menards Home Improvement store in Mount Vernon.
Mike has been a volunteer board member for the Edwardsville Plan Commission and Edwardsville Zoning Board of Appeals for a number of years. He is one of few professionals in Illinois who achieved status as a certified city planner (American Institute of Certified Planners) and certified economic developer (International Economic Development Council).
Mike also is a part-time instructor at SIU Edwardsville. As part of the Public Administration and Policy Analysis department faculty, he enjoys guiding students in his classes, helping them navigate through projects related to individual communities, housing studies, downtown development, economic development financing and more.
Throughout my professional career, I have always strived to focus on people’s needs and understand what issues are important to them. This helps build a level of trust and sets the stage for positive, pro-active partnerships.
